Who we serve
Tax advice for business owners.
We help owner-managers plan the company's tax, and how they take value out of it.
Your company and you, planned together.
For most owner-managed businesses, the biggest tax decisions sit on the line between the company and the people who own it.
We give tax advice to business owners and company directors on both sides of that line: the company's accounts, corporation tax, VAT and payroll, and the directors' personal tax, so salary, dividends, pensions and timing all work together.
Where it gets complicated.
The issues we see most often, and plan for.
Taking money out
Basic and higher rate dividend tax rose two points in April 2026. Salary, dividends and pension contributions need modelling together each year, using that year's rates.
The 26.5% band
Profits between £50,000 and £250,000 carry an effective 26.5% marginal rate, and associated companies share the limits.
Employer costs
Employer NIC is 15% above £5,000 a year, and the £10,500 employment allowance is not available to companies whose only employee is a director.
Investment & R&D
The £1m Annual Investment Allowance, full expensing and the merged R&D scheme can all reduce the bill.
Selling or passing on
Business Asset Disposal Relief is now 18%, and the new £2.5m cap on business property relief changes succession plans.
Compliance in one place
Bookkeeping, accounts, CT600, VAT and payroll in one joined-up year, with every deadline tracked.
Salary vs dividends in 2026/27.
Most directors take a combination. Salary is deductible for corporation tax and, above £6,708 a year, builds State Pension entitlement, but carries employer NIC at 15% above £5,000 a year and employee NIC above £12,570. Dividends are paid from profits after corporation tax and carry no NIC, but from 6 April 2026 are taxed at 10.75%, 35.75% and 39.35% above a £500 allowance.
The best mix depends on the company's profits, your other income, whether you are near the £100,000 threshold, and how much you need to draw. Employer pension contributions often complete the picture: deductible for the company, and free of tax and NIC for you within your annual allowance.
Director's loan accounts.
Money taken from the company that isn't salary, dividends or expenses goes through your director's loan account. If it is overdrawn at the year end and not repaid within nine months, the company pays a temporary tax charge of 35.75% on the balance for loans made from April 2026. HMRC refunds it only after the loan is repaid, and repaying then re-borrowing within 30 days does not count. Loans over £10,000 that are interest-free or cheap can also create a taxable benefit.
We keep an eye on the balance through the year, so it is cleared by dividend, salary or repayment before it becomes a problem.
Contractors and your own company.
If you work through your own limited company, the IR35 rules decide whether you are taxed like an employee on some or all of that income. Where your client is in the public sector, or is medium or large, it decides your status; where it is a small private sector client, you do. We review contracts and working practices, and structure pay and expenses for contractors whose engagements fall outside IR35.
Planning an exit.
Selling a company, bringing in investors or passing it to family all have tax consequences best planned years ahead. Business Asset Disposal Relief can reduce capital gains tax to 18% on up to £1 million of lifetime gains, but only if the conditions have been met for two years before the sale. For inheritance tax, 100% business and agricultural property relief is now limited to a combined £2.5 million per person, with 50% relief above that and any unused amount passing to a spouse.
Common questions.
Usually a combination. The right mix depends on company profits, your other income, employer NIC, the dividend rates for the year and pension contributions. After the April 2026 dividend rise it is worth re-running rather than repeating last year's figures.
If it isn't repaid within nine months of the year end, the company pays a temporary tax charge on the outstanding balance, refunded after repayment. There can also be a benefit in kind on larger interest-free loans.
Yes, and most clients have us do both, so the company and your personal tax are planned together.
Yes. We look after limited company contractors, including IR35 reviews, and plan salary, dividends and expenses for engagements outside IR35.
Ideally a couple of years before. Structure, share ownership and eligibility for reliefs such as Business Asset Disposal Relief are far easier to get right with time.
