Family Investment Companies

A family investment company is a private company set up to hold investments for the long term, with parents usually keeping control and children holding shares that carry future growth.

Tax planning for a move to the UK works best before you land: your arrival date, your overseas accounts and the claims you make in your first four years all shape what you pay.

07

Leaving the UK

When you leave the UK, the date you go, the ties you keep and the assets you hold decide whether you are non-resident and what the UK can still tax.

An engagement, in four steps.

Consultation

A confidential call or meeting, usually 30 to 45 minutes, about your circumstances, what you want to achieve and any deadlines coming up. Beforehand we ask for a short summary of your income, assets and any letters from HMRC, so the conversation is specific from the start. By the end you know whether we can help and what the work would involve.

Proposal and onboarding

We set out in writing what we will do, what we need from you and the fixed fee, and send our engagement letter for you to sign. We then complete our identity and anti-money laundering checks, which means photo ID and proof of address, and register as your agent with HMRC where the work needs it.

Review and advice

We review your current position, check the legislation and HMRC guidance, and analyse the options and planning opportunities open to you with your own figures. You receive written advice recommending the approach that works best from a tax perspective and for you, and we talk it through before anything is filed or put in place.

Ongoing support

We prepare and file the returns and claims that follow, and work with your solicitor or financial advisor where a will, trust or pension is involved. Through the year we remind you before payments are due, review your position before 5 April and after each Budget, and deal with HMRC on your behalf.
